Who Should I Direct My Prayers to?

Listen to this article

Now, some people have been given very strict directions on how they should frame their prayers that even when the Spirit wants to direct them in a certain way, that doctrine in their hearts becomes a hindrance.

Generally speaking, Jesus told us to direct our prayers to the father.

Luke 11:2 New Living Translation
Jesus said, “This is how you should pray: “Father, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon.

John 16:23-27 New International Version (NIV)
23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. 25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God

In this scripture, Jesus was trying to show us that we too, have a direct relationship with God the Father and do not need to say, Lord Jesus please tell God that I want this and that…. NO. You can just ask The Father directly because he is your father also.

This however does not mean we cannot address the the Lord Jesus in our prayers.

In scriptures we see prayers prayers being directed to the Father and at Times being directed to Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayers directed to the Father:

Ephesians 3:14-15 New International Version (NIV)
14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name.

Prayers to The Lord Jesus:

Acts 7:59 New International Version (NIV)
59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

One thing I would like to say is this. The Father and the son are One. They are one in mind, one in Spirit and one in purpose. In Jesus is the Father, and in the Father is Jesus. So don’t get too much into semantics.

Stephen was filled with the Spirit and i believe it was the Spirit who directed him to pray to Jesus as he did. Scripture says, we must have fellowship with both the Father and The Son. This means we talk to both the Father and The Son. In as much as Jesus tells his disciples that the Father will answer their prayers, he also promises them that He will answer their prayers.

John 14:11-14 New International Version (NIV)
11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
