Healing of The Two nations

Listen to this article

The ministry of Jesus was filled with miracles, signs and wonders. Sings can come in the form of a miracle but its a miracle with a message. So we shall look into the meaning of the signs performed by our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Story is found in LUKE 8:41-56.
Its a very interesting one.

Luke 8:41 (ESV) And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus’ feet, he implored him to come to his house,

Now note: Jairus was a ruler of the synagogue, thats an interesting title… its key.

Luke 8:42 (ESV) for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As Jesus went, the people pressed around him.

Note: The ruler of the synagogue sends the messiah to his house that he may heal his sick daughter who is 12 years old.

Luke 8:43 (ESV) And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone.

Note: When a woman had a discharge of blood she was considered unclean. So this was a woman who had been considered unclean for 12 years. So the time that Jairus’ daughter was born, is the time that this woman became unclean. We have two women: The unclean woman and the young pure virgin girl. But when this young pure girl was born, the older woman became unclean. It has been 12 years.

Lets continue.

Luke 8:44-45 (ESV)
44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.

45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!”

Note: The messiah had not been sent to heal the unclean woman. He was sent to heal the sick young virgin. Yet while on his was there, the unclean woman accessed her healing by faith, and was made clean before the real intended beneficiary is met.

Before we continue, let me explain the message.
The two women represent Israel and the Gentiles. When Israel was born in the wilderness, all other nations began to be known as gentiles and as unclean. So the young girl is Israel and the older unclean woman is the gentiles. Jairus represents God The Father. Who sent Jesus the Messiah that he may heal the nation of Israel.

Matthew 15:24 (ESV) He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

However this sign was showing that the gentiles, by faith would get their salvation before the nation of Israel for which he was sent. The gentiles did not see Jesus directly, same way, the unclean woman did not physically touch Jesus. She merely touched the hem of his garment.

We have no physical history with christ, we merely heard the gospel and believed. And by that faith, we received salvation before the young girl Israel.

Lets continue.

Luke 8:46-48 (ESV)
46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.” 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

we all know this part.

Luke 8:49 (ESV) While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.”

Now note. The very instant that the unclean woman is made clean by faith, Jairus’ daughter dies. In the same way, the very moment that the Gentiles received their salvation by faith, the nation of Israel died.

Acts 13:42, 44-46, 48 (WEB)
42 So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 44 The next Sabbath, almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and blasphemed. 46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, and said, “It was necessary that God’s word should be spoken to you first. Since indeed you thrust it from yourselves, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. 48 As the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of God. As many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

Notice how The verse in acts speaks of the Jews as being judged as unworthy of eternal life. And at the same time the gentiles are said to be appointed to eternal life. So as the gentiles are gaining salvation, Israel is dying.

Its as if the unclean woman, ‘snatched’ the little girls healing. That is the story of how the gentiles would by faith access salvation and at that moment Israel the nation the real target of the messiah dies.

Romans 9:4 (WEB) who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service, and the promises;

Romans 11:11-12 (WEB)
11 I ask then, did they stumble that they might fall? May it never be! But by their fall salvation has come to the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy. 12 Now if their fall is the riches of the world, and their loss the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fullness?

Let’s continue with the story in Luke 8

Luke 8:49-50 (WEB)
49 While he still spoke, one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house came, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t trouble the Teacher.” 50 But Jesus hearing it, answered him, “Don’t be afraid. Only believe, and she will be healed.”

Jesus is promising that though Israel has died, he will not abandon the nation, she will be restored to life.

Luke 8:51-52 (WEB)
51 When he came to the house, he didn’t allow anyone to enter in, except Peter, John, James, the father of the child, and her mother. 52 All were weeping and mourning her, but he said, “Don’t weep. She isn’t dead, but sleeping.”

Israel is not dead but sleeping. The messiah will visit her with his closest brothers.

Micah had prophesied concerning all this.

Micah 5:3 (WEB) Therefore he will abandon them until the time that she who is in labour gives birth. Then the rest of his brothers will return to the children of Israel.

Luke 8:53-55 (WEB)
53 They were ridiculing him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he put them all outside, and taking her by the hand, he called, saying, “Child, arise!” 55 Her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately. He commanded that something be given to her to eat.

Paul explains this restoration to life….

Romans 11:15 (WEB) For if the rejection of them is the reconciling of the world, what would their acceptance be, but life from the dead?

Some may wonder how there can be typologies in the new testament. When a prophet is sent by God, they do not prophesy with just their words. Even their life is prophetic. Same way, Christ actions were also prophetic, his healings were preaching the gospel to us. And expounding mysteries to the world.
